When To Visit Cabo for Whale Watch

The SEMARNAT (Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources for Mexico) set Cabo whale watching period in 2019 from December 15 – April 15. During this period it is when different species of whales will migrate from the cold waters of the north around Alaska, southward to the more temperate waters of Cabo.

The most desirable time to experience whale watching in Cabo San Lucas is from January to March. It is a period when there are the most whales and the highest activity — guaranteed 90-95% to see whale activity during this time.

The whales migrate back to the area from late December to early January and males find females for mating. More female whales’ attention means more active male whales.

Females whales star calving from start calving from late January through February, and into March. In this case, there is a higher possibility of seeing baby whales.

When is the Best Time Of Day To Go Whale Watching

If you have morning sickness, it is suitable to go for morning cruises as the waters usually are calmer and it is less windy. It is an excellent time to go if you have kids. There is morning activity as the whales gather and feed.

During mid-day, the waters begin to get rougher during whale watching tour.

While in the afternoon and early evening is the best time to go whale watching. It is the time of the day that has the most activity. It is because of the high tides and increased winds. You may experience a bumpy ride, but it is all worth it with the sights and activities of the whales.

What are the Types of Whales At Cabo

Humpback Whale is the largest population you will see during whale watching season in Cabo. These dark-colored whales are quite jolly, and you will see them in a group as they roll and play with each other.

Other often-sighted species in Magdalena Bay which is near Los Cabos are the Gray Whales. Grays Whales favor to roost near shore, so a great chance to see them without going to the waters. But if you wanted to enjoy whale watching more, it is better to see them from a boat.

These whales have been seen in the Cabo area as well like Killers, Blues, Sperm and Fin Whales but much rarer.

Unquestionably, January through March is the best time to go for whale watching in Cabo. This is the best time for whale watching in Cabo San Lucas!

Just a reminder, we are only visitors in the home of these giants. Respect their natural habitat and don’t do anything that will distract them in

You are lucky to see these tremendous marine life resources. To protect them always observe the Mexican whale watching regulations enforced by SEMARNAT.
